Municipal wastewater treatment facilities in Kotelnikovo, Volgograd Region.

Customer: EuroChem-VolgaKaliy LLC.

Treatment-plant capacity: up to 10,000 m³/day.

Construction of the Gremyachinsk potash deposit, the largest in the European part of the Russian Federation, drove the development of the Kotelnikovo District of Volgograd Region. EuroChem’s largest infrastructure project in the region was the construction of the Kotelnikovo wastewater treatment facilities.

The engineering scope was delivered on a turnkey basis by KST-water specialists:

  • Design;

  • Supply of the main and auxiliary equipment;

  • Supervised equipment installation;

  • Construction support, including designer supervision and engineering support for contractors;

  • Commissioning “at no load” (with clean water) and “under load”;

  • Training of treatment-plant personnel;

  • Nine months of industrial operation of the facility.

The treatment facilities provide a complete cycle of wastewater treatment and sludge processing:

  • Mechanical treatment with removal of sand, grease and contaminants smaller than 4 mm;

  • Biological treatment with separate nitrification and denitrification zones and deep nitrogen and phosphorus removal;

  • Separation of sludge and water in secondary clarifiers using floating and bottom-sludge collection technology;

  • Tertiary wastewater treatment on disc filters;

  • Ultraviolet wastewater disinfection;

  • Sludge dewatering, sand washing and dewatering, and screenings pressing.

The treatment-plant concept places the main process equipment in a single production building. Thus the principal processes, including mechanical treatment, tertiary treatment, dewatering, disinfection, reagent treatment and others, take place in one building. This minimizes piping and enables trouble-free equipment operation. The biological treatment structures are partially buried.

An external design organization initially developed a treatment-plant design based on a standard 1976 project. It provided for 17 permanent structures, a production building, channels, sand beds and sludge beds on an area exceeding 2 hectares.

KST-water developed a completely new design, reducing the wastewater-treatment-plant footprint by 40%, applying modern water-treatment technologies from Germany, reducing construction capital costs by 20% and energy consumption by 280%, increasing treatment efficiency, and reducing the volume of sludge requiring removal by 70%.
